One Acre invests in farmers to generate a permanent gain in farm income. We provide farmers with a "market bundle" that includes education, finance, seed and fertilizer, and market access. Our program is proven impactful – every year, we weigh thousands of harvests and measure more than 50% average gain in farm income per acre. We are growing quickly. In five years, we have grown to serve over 24,000 farm families with more than 300 full-time field staff in Tanzania.

Job Description

One Acre Fund is rapidly increasing the number of regions, districts, and members we serve each year. We are seeking a local government officer to act as: a point of contact for local Ministry of Agriculture officials; an administrator for reports and meetings; a resource for risks and issues involving officials. They would begin engaging with local government through regional and district meetings and forums (RAA, DAICOs, DCs, WAEOs and VAEOs) in the Lake Zone. They will also develop relationships that support the field activities of One Acre Fund across the entire country as may be needed.

This role would report to the Government Relations Specialist and demonstrate a strong understanding of local government structures, have an interest in agriculture, be prepared to travel regularly across Northern Tanzania, and be an effective communicator. The role requires someone with IT skills and an undergraduate degree.

Primary Duties of the Local Government Officer

• Build and maintain relationships with local government authorities as a focal person for communication between the organization and local government administration

• Ensure timely submission of all required letters to village, ward, district and regional authorities.

• Attend district and regional sectoral meetings called by LGAs and facilitate learning visits for LGAs to areas of operation.
• Drafting quarterly reports for dissemination to district and national partners

• Supporting the expansion of One Acre Fund’s activities both inward in increasing client density and outward into new villages, districts and regions
• Addressing and resolving conflicts arising in field program implementation.

• Ensure compliance of One Acre Fund operations with legal and regulatory requirements at local levels

• Arranging and/or facilitating relevant inspection and testing for seeds, fertilizer and premises in line with regulatory requirements
• Keeping track and advising on changes in local regulatory platform

• Conduct regular training and knowledge sharing for frontline staff on building and maintaining relationships with local government as well as mitigating and managing risks in operations.

We are seeking professionals with a minimum two years of work experience, some of which will have been in or with government institutions. S/he will demonstrate a long-term passion for agricultural development in Tanzania and will be familiar with the challenges faced by smallholder farmers in Southern Tanzania.   • Undergraduate degree from a recognized academic institution

  • Work experience in a demanding professional environment such as government, business or NGO’s

  • Demonstrated computer skills in email, internet usage, Microsoft Office

  • Strong written and oral communicator with good attention to detail

  • A willingness to commit to living in the Lake Zone for a long-term position

  • Leadership and management experience at work or outside of work

  • Proven ability to set and meet targets

  • Fluent in Kiswahili and English

  • Passionate about serving smallholder farmers
