The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Youth Economic Empowerment Activity (YEE) formally invites applicants to participate in a competitive grant process. USAID Tanzania Youth Economic Empowerment Activity focuses on tackling youth employability and entrepreneurship in agribusiness value chains in Iringa, Zanzibar and Mbeya. Using a three pronged approach of lifeskills, livelihood and leadership, USAID Youth Economic Empowerment Activity will support interventions geared towards young people aged between 15 to 35
USAID YEE seeks to leverage USAID/Tanzania’s investments in employment, education, agriculture, governance and health into one youth-centered program that builds the capacities of young people aged 15-35. USAID YEE will engage beneficiaries by using positive youth development approaches to empower rural Tanzanian youth and connect them to viable business and employment opportunities in the rural economy.
The grants facility will enhance income-generating potential across agricultural and other rural value chains and facilitate access to information, skills, and opportunities to ensure their success in business start-ups and sustained employment. USAID YEE is both market and demand driven; it connects youth with opportunities while providing them with life skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, and basic job seeking capabilities and skills in areas demanded by private sector employers.
USAID YEE focuses on developing and delivering training and mentoring in the three ‘L’s – Life skills, Livelihoods, and Leadership - designed to offer youth choices and to facilitate their journey along a pathway to richer, fuller, healthier and productive lives.
USAID YEE build youths’ capacity to contribute effectively to the economic development of Tanzania by creating examples of lawful, responsible, and accountable leaders. The programme is focused on increasing incomes and employability skills across agriculture value chains and includes the recently initiated industrialization programme.
USAID YEE intends to achieve success through three Intermediate Results (IRs):
IR1: Entrepreneurship and workforce-readiness skills of youth increased;
IR2: Leadership and positive community engagement by youth strengthened; and
IR3: Life skills for healthy living enhanced.
USAID YEE is announcing a two-step process to select eligible grant applications to implement activities that will empower young people in Tanzania to enhance their employability, engage in business, learn leadership skills, health life skills, and civic engagement.
Step 1: Interested organizations should submit concept papers summarizing proposed activities that will detail how a grant will contribute to more employability skills, actual employability, better life skills and new or expanding business opportunities.
Step 2: Approved concept papers lead to a request for a full application for consideration of grant awards.
USAID YEE anticipates awarding grants to fund successful applications submitted in response to the Annual Program Statement (APS). Successful concept papers that meet the criteria set forth in the APS may be invited to submit full applications. Successful applications will be selected for funding by USAID YEE.
The total amount of funding currently available for this APS is available through April 1, 2019. The number of awards and amount of available funding is subject to change and USAID YEE reserves the right to make no awards from this APS.
The APS solicits applications for interventions that will be implemented in Iringa (Kilolo and Iringa DC), Mbeya (Kyela and Rungwe DC) and Zanzibar (Unguja and Pemba), and submissions should clearly mention the geographic areas where project activities will be implemented.
The issuance of this APS does not constitute an award or commitment on the part of USAID YEE nor does it commit to pay for any costs incurred in preparing and submitting an application. USAID YEE reserves the right to fully or partially fund any or none of the applications submitted. Further, USAID YEE reserves the right to make no awards as a result of this APS.
The full APS, including all terms and conditions is available for interested organizations by sending an email request to: YEEGrants@DAI.com.
