Make the most out of your Easter holiday

Many employed people in Tanzania love the month of April because it has the most public holidays. There is Karume Day on the 7th, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, and Union Day on the 26th. However, out of all of these holidays people mostly look forward to the Easter break, and not necessarily due to religious reasons, but because they get 4 consecutive days off in the middle of the month! This gives you plenty of time to take a fun trip with family and friends. So, if you are currently contemplating where to go this Easter break, here are 10 destinations within Tanzania that you’ll surely enjoy.

1. Magoroto, Usambara Mountains

If you love the outdoors, then you’ll surely enjoy going hiking and camping in the incredibly green and lush Magoroto Forest east of the Usambara Mountains in Tanga. The cool weather and scenic mountainous views create an ambiance that keeps you relaxed throughout your hike.

2. Lushoto, Usambara Mountains

Also in the Usambara Mountains, Lushoto hosts the same lush environment, cool air, and atmosphere as Magoroto. However, if you are looking for a less physical vacation, then you can stay at one of the secluded lodges in the Usambara Mountains, and take day trips into the town to interact with the locals and their way of life or even go on easy hiking trips.

3. Kilwa, Lindi

Easter break may be a good time to learn some Tanzanian history by visiting the oldest and (once) most important city in East Africa. In addition to being rich with architectural and artistic history from the sultanate era, Kilwa also has some beautiful beaches and is a great spot to go fishing.

4. Kimbiji, Kigamboni

If you live in Dar es Salaam and want a beach getaway that’s not too far away or too crowded, then the serene and isolated Kimbiji beach is the place to go. There are a number of speciality lodges in the area that cater to families, couples, and single guests. They have excellent service, fresh food, and a bunch of water sports that will surely leave you feeling absolutely energised at the end of your vacation.

5. Zanzibar

Ok, so everyone loves to go to Zanzibar, and many people will probably be planning to spend their Easter break in this paradise. So, if you don’t mind the potential crowds and hiked up accommodation prices, then this is a guaranteed fun time. Plus, while the island might get packed, there are plenty of beach sites to choose from, including, Nungwi, Bwejuu and more – so you’ll sure be able to find a place to relax.

6. Dar es Salaam

Even if you live in Dar, there is plenty for you to do during your 4-days off. This includes spending the day at one of the many beach resorts in the city, going shopping in the city centre, drinking and dining with friends, and visiting some historical sites like the National Museum and Makumbusho Village.

7. Mwanza City

Thanks to readily available and affordable domestic flights, you can easily travel to Mwanza from any major region in Tanzania, and enjoy a lakeside Easter vacation. While Mwanza, or as locals like to call it, rock city, is commonly known for being a getaway to  Serengeti, you can also enjoy your Easter break within the city by delighting in a plethora of fresh fish, going fishing and on boat rides, and visit some historical sites from the colonial era.

8. Arusha City

While Arusha is a popular tourist region because of the Serengeti and Manyara National Parks, the urban metropolis of Arusha city is also a great place to spend your holiday. Not only can you visit some tourist attractions like the Cultural Heritage Centre and ICTR, but you can also enjoy a myriad of restaurants, bars, and live music spots. Arusha is an incredibly cosmopolitan city with people from all over the world, and this has resulted in an incredibly vibrant and worldly nightlife.

9. A staycation

Instead of spending money on a trip to a new city, beach resort, or national park –consider planning a vacation in your own city. A staycation is simply a vacation spent in one’s own home and involves visiting local attractions during the day.

So, for instance, if you live in Dar es Salaam you can research local sites, restaurants, and neighbourhoods that you’ve never visited or paid much attention to,and spend your vacation getting to know Dar better.

Also, to make it truly feel like a vacation, spice up your home by getting some fresh groceries, new movies, video games, and books, and other items that will help you relax in the comfort of your own house while saving money.

It’s never too late to plan something

Life is short, and you need to take full advantage of all the opportunities to relax and enjoy yourself. Easter break is a gift that occurs every year. So, even if you still don’t have any plans for this Easter break, hopefully, these 9 suggestions will get you thinking.

Happy Holidays!
