10 Tell-Tale Signs It’s Time to Buy a New Mobile Phone

  | 5 min read

Buying a new mobile phone is not a luxury but a necessity

While you should be careful with how you spend your money, buying a new mobile phone is not a luxury reserved for high-income earners, but a necessity for most people from all walks of life.  Before you shake your head in disagreement, consider how much time you spend on your phone? If you give it some thought, you’ll realise that you spend more time on your phone than any other electronic device you own. In fact, it is more important to own a phone than a laptop or even a car, as you can perform all the functions you do on your PC on a smartphone, and well, you can always take a taxi, bajaj, Uber, and other forms of transportation etc.

So, how often should you change your phone?

We all know someone who buys a new phone every time the latest iPhone is in the market.  However, this is not a realistic or economic habit for most people. Instead, there are certain signs that you can pay attention to that will indicate it’s time for something new.

1. Your battery keeps dying

While some people may be focused on the design of a phone, battery life is way more important, and the longer a phone can last without needing to be recharged, the better it is. So, if you need to charge your battery every couple of hours (given that you aren’t watching YouTube videos all the time), and the problem persists even after you buy a new phone battery, then it’s clear it’s time for a change.

2. You are out of storage

Your phone is where you store most of your pictures, music, videos, work-related documents, and more. So, there may come a point whereby your phone runs out of storage space. You can try and delete all your useless files, and if possible, you can get a memory chip with extra storage. Or, you can buy a new phone with at least 16 GB (preferably 32 GB) worth of storage space. It’s your choice but a phone with a large memory is the best bet.

3. It turns off suddenly

There’s nothing more annoying than when your phone randomly decides to shut down. Whether you are in the middle of a call, writing a text, or just listening to music – if your phone frequently turns itself off and takes a while to turn back on then it’s time you take back control and turn it off permanently.

4. Your screen freezes often

Your phone is meant to make your life easier. So, if your screen frequently freezes or your touch screen stops responding, and this makes you want to scream or throw your phone across the room, then it’s clear you need to move on.

5. Your OS is outdated

Some phone makers (especially Android makers) do not update the Operating System (OS) of some older versions of their phones, and as a result, you can find yourself unable to get new apps you really want because they have an upgraded OS that isn’t available for  your device. So, if you find yourself in this situation, you might as well get a new phone.

6. You are embarrassed to use your phone in front of friends

Let’s be real, most people care about what their friends think of them. If yours consistently make fun of your phone, to the point that you are embarrassed to use it in front of people, then shut them up by getting a new one.

7. The pictures are terrible

We all take pictures on our phones, and it sucks if they are always blurry, grainy, or have low-resolution. Luckily, new smartphone models tend to have high-resolution cameras that take sharp and clear photos. So upgrade today and take awesome Instagram photos that will make your friends envious.

8. You have to replace important parts

If your speakers, camera, or any other internal part stops working, and the repair costs are giving you a headache, then you may be better off saving your money and buying a completely new and fully-functioning phone.

9. It’s time for faster internet

4G or LTE phones enable you to download files and load pages on the internet 10 times faster than 3G phones. So, if you want faster internet, then getting a recent phone model is the solution you seek.

10. You can afford something better

If you have money to spare and feel like you deserve to treat yourself, then a new phone is a great gift that you will surely use every day.

Which smartphone should you buy?

Once you’ve figured out whether or not you need to buy a new phone, your next thought probably is, ‘What phone should I buy?’ Or to be even more specific, ‘What phone can I buy given my budget and requirements’? Luckily, we’ve got a guide to help you pick the right smartphone that will last you for years until it’s time to switch things up again.
