The Wonder Workshop started in 2005 when a group of adult polio victims, many of whom were begging on the streets in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, came together with help from Blue Mango Photography, funds from The Dar es Salaam Charity Goat Races and great support from companies in Dar es Salaam donating their scrap metal.
On August 26th 2005, after ongoing training in the art of welding, the project, Wonder Workshop, was registered as a Tanzanian NGO. The Organisation’s primary aim is to train disabled Tanzanians, in particular those living with the effects of polio, in various arts and crafts and provide them with marketing opportunities so that the sales of the craft items pays them a fair and sustainable source of income. In addition the Wonder Workshop aims to promote and practice environmental awareness by recycling waste materials to make its products.
Wonder Workshop is today a group of 30 enthusiastic men and women with a disability making a wide variety of unique, handmade and high quality art pieces using recycled materials. We offer a catalogue range of paper products made from used paper, used boxes and natural fibres, wooden toys and household items from cut-off pieces of Tanzanian hard wood, to soap and candles scented with natural oils from Zanzibar and jewelry made from glass beads using bottles and old window panes. All of this of course in addition to our widely knows welded animals ranging from mini to life size. We are also very experienced in making customized orders and exclusive art pieces. In addition to the sales in our own on-site shop, many of our items are sold in the main tourist destinations in Tanzania, as well as abroad.
