Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam (AKH, Dar) is a premier secondary and tertiary referral integrated healthcare system that aims to provide accessible, high quality, cost effective medical care services to the people of Tanzania and beyond.
The Hospital offers a continuum of care coordinated across its Primary Medical Centres in Mbeya, Iringa, Dodoma, Morogoro, Mwanza and Arusha and Outreach Health Centres in Dar es Salaam’s Mbezi Beach, City Centre, Masaki, Mikocheni and Tandika and in Buzuruga, Mwanza. In 2012, the Aga Khan Hospital network set out on a US$ 83 million (Tshs. 181 billion) expansion plan that will see the Hospital develop into a fully-fledged world-class health care institution by 2018.

In addition to excellent diagnostic services such as cardiac catheterization and nuclear medicine the Aga Khan Hospital offers over 30 clinical specialties and subspecialties, including Cardiology, Oncology, Family Medicine, Endocrinology (diabetes), Gastroenterology (digestive system), Gynaecology, Nephrology (kidneys), Neurology, Orthopaedic, Paediatrics and Neonatology.
Quality control in laboratory diagnosis, appropriate documentation in medical records, regular supply of pharmaceuticals and continuing education of nurses and doctors are some of the practices that AKH, Dar emphasises in its approach to institutional development. The Hospital also has a fully integrated health management system (HMIS) and laboratory information management system (LIMS), allowing for accurate and timely information storage and retrieval, which is integrated between the main hospital and countrywide health centres.
The Aga Khan Hospital together with the Primary Medical Centres and Outreach Health Centres is the first and only healthcare system in the country to attain the ISO 9001:2000 Certification for compliance with the International Quality Assurance standards in all clinical, diagnostic, administration and support services.
The Hospital is working towards achieving the prestigious US based Joint Commission International (JCI) accreditation. This is the highest form of accreditation, and with over 3,000 standards to be met. The Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam serves as the training site for the Aga Khan University Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes in Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and General Surgery leading to Master of Medicine. In addition it is the only private hospital Ministry of Health Community, Development Gender, Elderly and Children accredited internship site for medical and pharmacy graduates.
