Travelers through the African Savannah land approach with relief the tall Mvuli tree, with it’s leaves spreading out like an umbrella and providing a cool refreshing shade. They lie down and relax under the cool shade, kivuli in swahili language, and therefore they named the tree mvuli. When the umbrella was introduced to East Africa, natives could only compare it to Mvuli tree, and they named the umbrella Mwavuli, which means “derived from mvuli tree”
